I am currently recovering from a thyroid lobectomy. I was informed today that the lab results revealed that it was not cancer as initially suspected but rather hashimoto's disease. Does this mean that I did not need to have the lobectomy? Will I need to be on medication now? Will my mood and weight change? I am nly seeing my surgeon in a week but am anxious to get some answers as soon as possible.
Hello, Thank you for your query Welcome to health care magic.
Hashimotos thyroiditis is a condition where body's own immune system attack the thyroid gland. It is not usually treated with surgery. However if there is suspicion of cancer/initial investigations are inconclusive for cancer, surgery is warranted .
Since your thyroid gland is being attacked by immune cells,it affects the production of thyroid hormone. Thyroid hormone is required for proper metabolism and functioning of our body. Your doctor will look for the thyroid hormone level in body(TSH, T3 and T4) and you will need to take Thyroid hormone supplement like elthroxin as needed.
Hope I was able to answer your question Please feel free to address further concerns Regards, Dr.Lekshmi
