Suggest Treatment For Infected Uvula

I have had a pus pocket on my uvula. I took the last amoxicillin pill this morning. 2x for the last 7 days. My uvula is now dragging down further touching my tongue. Should I be going back to the doctors office since nothing has changed? Should I give the antibiotics more time?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern.

As per your query you have condition called uvulitis means swollen uvula . There can be many reasons for swelling of uvula .

As you mention that you already complete the course of antibiotics for 7 days . This means that uvulitis is not due to bacterial infection but occur due to some other reason.

The other reasons can be :-

- Dryness of throat .

- Alcohol abuse .

- Viral infection .

- Due to trauma or allergy .

I would suggest you to not to continue antibiotics any further and consult ENT specialist (ear, nose, throat) for proper examination . Doctor may order blood test , throat or uvula culture test or X-ray of that region to confirm the diagnosis .

Doctor may prescribe antiviral drugs ( acyclovir) , steroid drugs to treat allergy and swelling or anti histamine drugs .

Surgical removal of uvula is not recommended because it perfrom many important functions.

For now do warm saline gargles and take ibuprofen (if not allergic) or paracetamol for pain and swelling.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
