Suggest Treatment For Red Bumps On New Born Baby

My 3 week old s face is covered in small red bumps with some red patches on his chin, cheeks and forehead. I called his pediatrician and they said it sounds like baby acne. I wash all of our clothes and bedding in Dreft laundry detergent and I still place a baby blanket on my shoulder when picking him up. However, it has gotten worse in the last couple days. Is it okay to put desitin on his acne?
