Suggest Treatment For Shinsplints

I am not sure if i have shinsplints or a stress fracture. i used to have shinsplints (for sure) in both shins but then after running a 4K race in RI today, my right shin is completely fine while the left shin (towards the center of the more muscle-ly part of my inner shin) hurts way more than usual. I love running and i hope i dont have shin splints!

Hi,

Your problem is shin splits and you seem to be be regular runner. If you need to continue this activity you the must take care of certain aspects of your body. Your core muscle need to be developed especially from the back down. A sufficient warming up period is essential before you start to run. Hope you do not have and foot deformity or arch problems. If in doubt get it checked. It obvious that you need the right footwear for the race. Shin splits once it develops should be treated by rest, icing, NSAIDs. So try your best to avoid getting it.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. George Verghese, Orthopedic Surgeon
