Suggested To Take Oxycodone For Arthritis Pain. Not Effective. Can I Increase The Dosage?

I have recently been given a script for 10mg oxycodone. It seems to be too weak for effective reduction of my arthritis pain. I would like to know if I get my doctor to increase dosage to 20mg PRN would that do a better job or pain reduction without increasing side effects risks and is this dose (20mg) within the average range for real and persistent chronic pain from osteoarthritis? Michael Sell - My doctor prescribed vicodin for the past seven years but I didn t want to take so much tylenol on a regular basis. (neither did the insurance company)

Hi and thanks for using this panel for your health questions.
I a very sorry to hear about this arthritis pain.

There is no standard dose for most pain medications. We always strive to use the minimal possible dose to get your pains controlled. If you think 10mg dose is not doing good enough, then asking for an increase is rational.
However, you may also want to add another pain drug like tramadol which will limit the side effects of oxycodone at higher doses.

The most feared side effect is respiratory depression. If you should opt to get the dose increased, then watch out for this and be ready to stop and seek help if you notice this.

Hope this helps. Feel free to come back if you have more questions.
Wish you good health
