Swelling, Lump, Severe Pain In Leg. History Of Fall From Bike, Hitting Leg. Possible Fracture?

I fell off a bike hitting my leg. I had immediate swelling and pain. I used ice and took Motrin for pain. It has been over a month and there is still swelling, a lump and the pain is now getting worse. I drive a stick shift and have pain using the clutch. Is it possible to have a fracture? If so, it's been over a month since the injury iss there anything that can be done?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Although ou have not mentioned the exact area of your injury but a persistent and worsening pain even after a Month of injury definitely raises the suspicion of fracture or torn ligaments if the pain is around ankle joint.
You are advised to consult an orthopaedic surgeon and get an x-ray and possible a MRI of the injury area.
Thanks

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

From the description , it seems that you have developed a HEMATOMA in the soft tissues of leg.

The very fact that you are able to carryout daily activities rules out a fracture.

Generally , Hematomas resolve spontaneously over a period of time without any issues. There is a remote possibility of a hematoma getting infected especially in DIABETIC persons (beware if you are a diabetic).

The initial management of the Hematoma is as follows -
* Rest to the injured part and dont involve in activities which puts additional strain on the injured tissues.
* Ice packing should be applied for about 20 minutes once in every 2 hours.
* Use elastic compression bandage around the swollen area to reduce the swelling
* Elevation of the limb
* Analgesic & anti inflammatory medications

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
