Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for yoir query.
From description it seeems to be thrombophlebitis (inflammation of superficial vein) at infusion site as redness and swelling present and it is painful to touch. Giving rest and application of thrombophobe ointment will be helpful to reduce pain and inflammation. Get it evaluated by your doctor for proper treatment.
Hope this will helps you.
Regards.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

All the findings in the description suggests that you have developed SUPERFICIAL THROMBOPHLEBITIS. This is nothing but inflammation in the vein into which the I.V.line was kept.

This condition generally needs
* an appropriate antibiotic for a week or so
* analgesic and anti inflammatory medications
* Moist local heat fomentation to reduce the swelling

With proper treatment, this will subside completely without any issues.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
