Swollen Hard Lumps On The Lower Leg. Dangerous?

My husband is an ER doctor and will not seek medical attention. For years, he has had very large (3 to 4 in. in diameter) and they a little swollen and hard. They seem to come and go at different locations on his lower leg...mostly shin or calf . He said they are a little tender, but hard to the touch. Any idea what could be going on? Everything that we know about him would suggest that he is very healthy, but this concerns me. Any ideas?

Hi Aaronamyjay,

From your description, it is not very clear wether this swelling is in the muscular part or the bony part of the leg. If this swelling is changing location from shin or calf, than it shows that this is something which is involving the bone and muscles both. And another thing is that this is coming and going and not present all the time and is tender in nature.
From this description it is difficult to make sure anything about this as it is rare that something is coming and going in bony and muscular part and that too is not permanent in nature.
Only after proper history and examination and if rquired investigation something can be make sure regarding this, I would suggest you to convince your husband to have a discussion with ortho doctors regarding this to make sure, what this is.

Thanks and hope this will help.
