Swollen Stomach After Hernia Surgery. Will It Flatten If Abdominal Exercises Are Done And How Long Will It Take?

I had hernia surgery two months ago. My stomach has swollen so much it is now the size of a basketball. My doctor tells me their is nothing that can be done because it is a combination of the internal parts pushing out and fat. He implanted a mesh over the hernias which is in good condition. Reading on this webb site it looks as tho it is common for swelling to occur after hernia surgery. Until the insides repair themselves and they quit giving of fluids this will happen. It may take several months but the swelling should go down. I have also been told that by two nurses. It also appears from the comments that I need to be doing abdominal exersizes to flatten the abs. What do you think?

Hello,
Thanks for the query to H.C.M. Forum.
I would come up with these measures for this type of fatty abdomen , these includes.
1 Avoid greasy , spicy , junk foods, sweets , chocolates , alcohols , drinks with caffeine in them.
2 Eat bland diet , high fiber diet , moderate protein in food , fruits ( in limit). Plenty of tepid ( lukewarm ) water .Honey with warm water on empty stomach will also help. As honey is a rich source of fructose .
3 Exercises ,but not weight lifting . Consult a physiotherapist and get his consultation for abdominal exercises
Good luck. Dr. HET

HI
Thanks for the query.

The abdominal swelling is common but not usually occurs in all patients. The most important thing in hernioplasty which means hernia repair is that the abdominal wall is properly repaired and strengthen so that the hernia do not reoccur. The distended abdomen or large belly is also a risk factor for hernia formation therefore weight reduction is much more important in hernia prevention. Abdominal exercise are suggested which will not only decrease your abdominal swelling but also will strengthen your abdominal wall which will prevent hernia formation

Thanks
Regards
