Taking Zyprexa, Developed Tardive Dyskinesia, Sleep Apnea. Will Mirapex Help?
I am taking zyprexa have used most of modern anti psychotics and have developed tardive dyskenisia or some type of movement disorder which is worsening. I have recently been diagnosed with sleep apnea and I know I have a little bit of restless leg but now I m being asked to take Mirapex and am a little worried that I m going to a whole new level of treatment of a condition I developed 15y ago and it s no longer about annual weight gain but movements and other lousy side effects of the antipsychotics. Question-- should Mirapex be considered here?
Mirapex is a dopamine agonist that works well in patients with restless legs syndrome. It may also provide some benefit in your tardive dyskinesia symptoms. But it may counter the therapeutic effects of Zyprexa which is a dopamine antagonist. Since both restless legs and involuntary movements are drug induced, I feel it would make more sense to assess if there is any possibility of reducing the dose of Zyprexa or if there are any other antipsychotics that you have not yet tried. Clozapine and aripiperazole are two options which may be considered as they are less likely to be associated with these adverse effects. If, however, there is no other option, then you should try Mirapex.
Hope this helps you. Best wishes.
