Teenager Having A Large Lump On Left Side Of The Ribs, Pain. Tests Showed Normal. Doing Athletics. Suggestions?

My 14 year old daughter has a large lump on the bottom left side of her ribs - I can cup it in my hand. She is in extreme pain and no doctors seem to be able to help. Two years ago she had this and after x-rays, hospital admission, ultra sounds and an MRI they still did not know what it was. This all took about three months and by that time the lump was slightly smaller and the pain as not very severe so we decided against surgery. It has now all started again! When she has pain the lump is hard and very sensitive to the touch. It originally became a problem when she started doing athletics and had to stop. She started playing hockey this year and it was fine in the beginning but last week the lump became larger and she is once again experiencing extreme pain. Any suggestions.

Hello,
Thanks for writing in.
There are two important parts in the investigation of the lump your daughter has since two years. On one side we have to find out what the lump is, its origin, contents, suspected pathological diagnosis on imaging. You say that ultrasound, MRI, were normal earlier. Two years is a long time for a lump to stay and grow with or without changes in its internal structure. This can be the cause of pain.
Secondly an imaging guided FNAC or biopsy would be of great help in arriving at a possible tissue diagnosis.
May I suggest you to pleas discuss your daughter's lump indetail with your surgeon. Please tell then about the severe pain for urgent clinical attention.
Hope this helps.
