Test Showed Elevated Gamma GT Level. Is There Any Problem With Heart?
Hello doctors, I m 45 yo, female. My Gamma GT level was 55, else my AST and ALT were within normal range. Lipid profile was normal. No obstruction in bile duct from abdominal Ultrasound . Result from cardiac echo indicated diastolic dysfunction. Could my elevated gamma GT suggest something is wrong with my heart? Thanks.
Hi there,
Thanks for writing in. I am a qualified and certified cardiologist. I read your mail with diligence. There are many causes of elevated gamma gt. Some had been excluded by your narrative think about others and then ask the question again:
Greater-than-normal levels of GGT may indicate:
Alcohol abuse (You have not mentioned about its use or your being non alcoholic)
Flow from the liver is blocked (cholestasis) (Excluded)
Heart failure (Diastolic heart failure can also cause congestion of liver and lead to elevation of GGT)
Hepatitis (No history given, no tests available)
Liver ischemia (lack of blood flow) Excluded
Liver necrosis Excluded
Liver tumor Excluded
Scarring of the liver (cirrhosis) Do not know if ultrasound was specially done for this
Use of drugs that are toxic to the liver No history available
Good Luck and Best wishes.
Dr Anil Grover
