Tongue, Inside Mouth White, Cracked, Cheeks Swollen With White Pus. Reason And Cure?

My tongue and inside of mouth is white, cracked and swollen, my left check is very swollen and white pus covered inside, some on the right cheek. I do have epilepsy and might have fallen on that spot but have never had it break out inside like this. The place I hit was probably on my left jaw. Thanks, sincerely for any help.

hello there ,

As you have mentioned in your history i suspect you have developed and abscess in your cheek mucosa due to physical trauma.

Physical trauma to the oral mucosa leads to inflammation and swelling and if not treated in time the wound may undergo infection leading to formation of abscess .

white appearence of tongue and other parts of oral mucosa is may be due to fungal infection due to poor oral hygiene and decreased salivation due to epileptic drugs.

i would suggest you to consult an oral surgeon and get the clinical examination done accordingly the abscess can be drained followed by a course of antibiotic and analgesics will give you relief.

i hope this helps ,

take care.

Hi,

Thanks for asking the query,

Your clinical history and symptoms suggest that you have developed abscess in the cheek mucosa due to accidental trauma may be at the time of epileptic attack .

You also hit your left jaw . I suggest you to visit to Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon and get checkup done and look for any fracture , occlusion , mobility , avulsion of tooth if present .

White cracked tongue can be because of poor oral hygiene , vitamin deficiencies or due to use of epileptic drugs .

Take an OPG x-ray..
Take tab flemiclav 625 mg TDS , tab flagyl 400mg TDS , tab dolonex TDS all this for 5 days .

Take lukewarm saline gargles 3-4 times a day ,
Use antiseptic mouthwash gargles twice daily , eat semisolid diet avoid eating hot and spicy food .

Hope this helps out.

Regards..

Dear friend.

Thanks for sharing your concern.

white appearence of tongue and other parts of oral mucosa may be due to fungal infection or due to poor oral hygiene .
Decreased salivation due to epileptic drugs might also be the cause here.

Few other reasons could be as follows.

1.Deficiencies of vitamins mainly like B and C.
2. cheek biting(chronic),
3.traumatic injuries and
4.immune disorders.

Here i would suggest you to see your oral surgeon in this regard, for proper oral evaluation.
and hence treatment.

Hope it helps.

Thanks.
Take care.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. Saurabh Gupta's  Response
Hello,
Thanks for writing to us.
Regarding the painful swelling in the oral cavity, it could be mucositis or inflammation of the buccal mucosa secondary to vitamin deficiency or allergy to some food/medicines. This will require a thorough examination of the oral cavity and throat as well as blood investigations to rule out anemia.
If you can mail me a photograph of the oral cavity, I will be able to help you in a better way.
For the time being you can try the following measures which will give you some relief:
1. Drink plenty of warm water; avoid hot/cold food and beverages.
2. Avoid fizzy drinks, alcohol and smoking if any.
3. Try taking mild anti-inflammatory medicines such as diclofenac or paracetamol for the pain relief and multivitamins for increasing the body immunity.
4. Also, you can try taking short course of oral steroids such as prednisolone for a quick relief.
Hope this information helps you.
Wishing you good health...
Regards.
