Tonsillectomy, Painful Ears. Taken Ibuprofen And Paracetamol. Pain Killers Not Helpful. Will I Be Okay?

Hi I am on day 9 after a tonsillectomy, pain killers aren't working. I was given stronger ones at the walk in centre at the weekend. My throat is bearable it's my ears, they are causing me so much pain. I wake in year as they hurt so much. A nurse told me to try steam but that made them worse. I've been told they're not infected. I take tramadol, Paracetemol and ibuprofen every 4 hours then night time hits and the pain is worse but I've had my limit of tablets for the day. They also gave my a spray for my mouth which was helping till I sprayed this morning and it stung. I can eat and drink it hurts but again bearable. My ears are in constant pain there's no break from it. Can you suggest anything or is it just normal and I have to ride it out?

Hi and thanks for the query.
Pain in the ears is a very common phenomenon after tonsillectomy surgery.
Ears and throat are supplied by the same nerve, pain arising from the throat is misread by the brain as originating from the ear, hence the ear pain after tonsillectomy.
The pain will eventually go away as your theoat heals from the surgery.
Till then you can take pain killers.
Dont forget to do salt water gargling 4 times per day. It hastens recovery.
Vitamin c rich foods like lemons and oranges also hasten recovery.
Consult your surgeon again if the problem does not settle in 2 days.
Regards,
Dr Rajkishori.
