Toothache Followed By Pain In Half Jaw On Lower Left Side. Should I Be Concerned ?

My husband started having a toothache this afternoon, which turned into the half jaw on lower left side and now its like someone yanked out a tooth without any novacaine. He says lighting bolts of pain are spearing his lower jaw. Have you ever heard of something like this? Even though its his mouth, should I take him to the ER?

Welcome to HCM. Sometimes tooth ache is very severe and occasionally it spreads on one side of the jaw as your husband is suffering. "Lightning bolt" of pain is also not uncommon. The severity and the quality of dental pain depends on many factors. Any way, your husband is not suffering from anything abnormal. You can safely give him Paracetamol 1 gram( two 500 mg tabs) to reduce his pain. Consult ER as soon as possible. They will diagnose the problem and treat accordingly and will also see that the tooth can be saved or not. A shot of Lignocaine in ER will reduce the pain immediately. If you can not attain ER immediately you should start antibiotics like Amoxicillin 500 mg + clavulanic acid 125 mg three times a day along with Paracetamol 1 gm when you feel pain, as stated above. Get well soon.

Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

Initially, cause of toothache has to be evaluated clinically by a dentist.

Take ciplox and paractemol tablets.

Grossly decayed teeth has to be extracted.

Infected pulp ,if present, has to be extirpated.

Maintain oral hygiene well.

Gargle with warm saline.

Abscess if present, has to be drained and curetted.

Take care.

hi...
thanks for the query...
well... the toothache is matter of concern... it seems to be carious and infected tooth that might require root canal treatment...
so... visit your dentist for proper clinical examination and get your husbands treatment done...
in the meantime you can take painkillers...
take care...

Dear friend.

Thanks for sharing your concern.

your present symptoms appears that you have an impacted or partially erupted third molar.

This could be the reason for acute and radiating pain in his jaw.

Another reason could be deep dental caries. This can be confirmed clinically as well as radio graphically.

therefore in my view, it is better to visit your dentist and get it examined.

Hope it helps.

Thanks.

Take care.
