Unstable Sleep Pattern Due To Over Thinking. Cause Of Symptoms?

Okay, I tend to over think and this prevents a regular sleep pattern, right now I am more curious to find out if there is a word that describes these symptoms. I would also like to know some techniques to over come it, I m doing a CBT course and though it helps, to an extent with the anxiety in the day, my sleep pattern is still worryingly unstable which makes the anxiety harder to deal with, it just seams like a vicious cycle right now! I ve tried getting up after 20 mins if I m still not asleep and doing something boring, but I just keep going to bed and feeling more awake again.

We all understand that sleep is extremely sensitive physiological phenomenon, which is adversely impacted by anxiety, stress and medical diseases. Sometimes a viscious cycle sets in which leads to chronic insomnia. I think you need good counselling sessions to manage anxiety and mild anxiolytic after clinical consultation.

Psychiatrist Dr. Jonas Sundarakumar's  Response
Hello and welcome to Healthcare Magic. Thanks for your query.

From the description of your symptoms, it appears that you may be having an anxiety disorder which is the cause of your sleeping difficulty (insomnia). It's good that you are taking efforts and doint a CBT course to deal with your anxiety. In case your symptoms are distressing and disabling, I would advise you to consult a psychiatrist for anti-anxiety medication. Once your anxiety symptoms are controlled, you sleep should regularize automatically.

I would also advise you to follow strict sleep hygiene techniques and practice relaxation exercises reduarly. Regular physical exercise in the evenings can also facilitate sleep.

Wish you all the best.
