Weak Muscles In Legs, One Leg Thinner Than Other, Limping. Doing Physiotherapy. Recommendations?
My niece is 16 years old. Something happened 10 years ago to her leg. No one is quite sure. She has been limping since then with one leg thinner than the other. We have gone to an orthopedic surgeon and her leg lengths are the same. He referred us to physiotherapy because she apparently has weak muscles. Initially the physio felt that nothing could be done but after examinations said we should try strengthening the muscles. We just started last week. Do you think there is hope for her?
Hi, With a history of leg atrophy and weakness that started 10 years ago (at 6 years of age) one must consider any childhood disease (can be acute infection or a degenerative process) with neuromuscular component. If the condition is not worsening, then hopfully it is stabilised. Your niece may need to take electro myography investigation to know the strength of muscles. After that certain muslce strengthening exercises may help.
Hope is certainly there and she is very young, a reson for better outcome.
Hope this helps Dr Anjana Rao
