Weird Feeling In Foot While Playing Followed With Swelling, Severe Pain In Second Meatreastal. Detected Possible Fracture. Guide

Hi, I am a 16 year old girl and I was playing lacrosse and my foot felt weird but I didn't stop plying thinking nothing of it. The next morning I couldn't walk or touch my second meatreastal in my foot. I went to a doctor and thy said it might be fractured or badly bruised ms gave me a splint and crutches. It's been two days and my foot is so swollen and looks plastic and is tingly and I still can't walk. I'm going to go to the orthopedic in a couple of days but what could be wrong?

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Based on the description, I suspect that you could have suffered a fracture of the metatarsal bone.

An xray of the injured area will diagnose the presence of a fracture.

The general treatment guidelines are as follows -

* Protection - in the form of a splint (which you already have)
* Rest to the injured area and avoid any activity that produces pain
* Ice packing over the painful area once in 2 hours
* apply an elastic compression bandage around the injured area to prevent swelling
* Elevation of the foot end most of the times in a day to reduce the swelling
* Use analgesics like Advil or Aleve to reduce the pain and inflammation.

Consult an orthopedic surgeon for further workup and management

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
