Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
my left fifth metatarsal has stuck out for a number of years and over the last year the skin around the bulge has become harder from rubbing against my shoe. Most of the time it doesn t bother me but after wearing high heels it does and the discomfort lasts for a few days. Its a general pain, not sharp but dull. The area is always red, I assume from the rubbing. I have high arches, and just think the look of the bulge at the end of the bone has become worse and wearing sandals that show the left side of my foot is a no-no. I m not sure but I think this has also resulted in hard sckin build up closer to my little toe. Should I be worried? Thanks
I think your problem is called Tailor's bunion. According to a popular website you can do the following: a) Put a silicone bunion pad over the tailor’s bunion to relieve pain and prevent the bunion from rubbing against your shoe. b) Wear shoes that are flexible and have a wide toe box. Avoid wearing narrow, pointed shoes and high heels. c) Hold ice to your foot for 5 to 10 minutes up to 3 times per day. d) Take non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) to bring down swelling and relieve pain. e) Do calf stretches twice per day. Stand facing a wall with your toes pointing toward the wall. Step back with the affected leg to stretch the calf. Hold the position for 30 to 60 seconds.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
