Hi,I am Neethu Vipin (Dietitian & Nutritionist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I'm 50 years old and have purposely gone on a diet to lose weight. I am 5'4' and weigh 100 lbs. Since january I have lost 45 lbs. I look great but feel kind of fatigued alot. I was eating 1000 calories a day to lose this weight and now am trying to increase my food intake but,I'm having a hard time because I get so full that I just can't put another bite in my stomach. I am getting down about 1200 calories a day.I do not excersise.I'm concerned that I will continue to lose weight and i feel this is not healthy especially at my age.Am i hurting my body? do i need to just suffer through the full feeling or is 1200 calories enough for my body. I take a multi vitamin twice a day. I just don't feel very energized and am wondering if I've gone too far on this weight loss? I do fear gaining the weight back so i continue to count my caloric intake. Do I have a form of anorexia?
Hello and thank you for your question. It does sound like you have a form of anorexia. In reality at 5'4" you were at a normal body weight at 145 pounds with a BMI (body mass index) of 24.9. Now you are underweight with a BMI of 17.2. A BMI of 18.5 to 25 is normal. When you are underweight you can damage your health. It also makes it harder to recover from any illness you may get if you are underweight. You need to be exercising regularly and probably eating at least 1500 calories per day. If the thought of this gives you psychological distress, please see a counselor that specializes in eating disorders as soon as possible. It would also be a good idea for you to see a primary care doctor for some basic blood tests to make sure that you drastic weight loss had not already caused damage to your kidneys or other organs.
