Acute sunburn can happen due to excessive exposure to outdoor sun, specially to UVB component of sun ( which is the inciting agent).
Acute sunburn can be very painful.
I usually ask my patients of acute sunburn to take a short course (5-7 days) of oral steroids.
Along with this application of topical moderately potent steroid cream like fluticasone also helps.
An OTC painkiller like ibuprofen helps with the pain part.
Of course, i reinforce use of a broad spectrum sunscreen (minimum SPF 30) throughout the day in my patients.
take care
