I have been on levothyroxine for 24 year dose.15mg underactive. Recently i have not been feeling well depression anxiety.I felt very overwhelmed.I went to the doctor and he placed me on cipralex. 2 weeks on this med i felt terrible my face was swollen. I went back to doctor.Although he did say to stay on cipralex he ran some blood work. 4 days later i get a call telling me to go off my thyroid meds because my level is to high.I have just returned from doctor and he says to continue to stay off for 1 month and that maybe i will not have to go back on the levothyroxine ever. I am confused and he did not help. Why after all these years would it produce too much. Thank you
Good day. Noted the question. It would be great if you could post the initial (pre treatment) thyrotoxicosis function test reports. However I do realize that it was 24 years ago and it's difficult to get those reports. Did you mean that you are now on 150 mcg of levothyroxine? Wgat is your current weight. And will you be able to post your current thyroid function reports. Thus is required before I can answer your question. If you have had underactive thyroid for 24 years, you should be careful going off the tablets completely. I feel a reduction in dose is more appropriate if your TSH level is low now. Having said this, I must say that, I have seen people developing hyperthyroidism after years of having hypothyroidism. Both these conditions are on opposite end of the auto immune thyroid disease. Hashimotos disease can change to Graves disease and vice versa. There is another possibility of having autoimmune thyroiditis during the course of hypothyroidism which mimic like hypothyroidism.
I do realize that it is too much of an information and can be confusing. It's better to meet an endocrinologist rather than general physician to decide further. Regards Binu
