My husband had a severe sore throat. It was so swollen that it made his voice sound odd. He had two different antibiotics (the first one did not work) and the severe pain decreased. At the same time he had a protist intestinal infection, and he took flagyl after the other two antibiotics. He now has a constant sore throat with feelings of gagging. He is overweight, previous heart attack (2001), history of stomach acid problems. He takes nexium, and they also have him taking Claritin plus the usual heart stuff
HI. This is complicated case and should have multi-disciplinary approach. The sore-throat can be due to severe Pharyngitis and it is possible that he is suffering from sinusitis which is giving post- nasal drip of infected material to have recurrent or not solving problem. He needs to continue medicines till getting cured. CT scan of the sinuses along with routine blood and urine check up is a must. Flagyl Helps in throat infection. The reflux , GERD might be adding on to the existing problem. He should continue Nexium - Esomeprazole and flagyl .
