What Causes Acid Reflux And Foul Smelling Bowel Movement In Pregnancy?
I am about 13 weeks pregnant. Since I was about 3 weeks pregnant I had acid reflux they had me on prilosec and nexium which work for about a week to a week and a half then they stop and it gets worse. Also I have had times of diarrhea and now for the past week I have had smelly BMs (smells like it does when I have a virus) and cramping feeling and soft stool. I have felt like this a couple times before since pregnant.
Your acid reflux and diarrhoea with foul smell seem to be two different problems. During pregnancy, the increase in the levels of a hormone called as progesterone relaxes the sphincter valve at the junction of food pipe and the stomach. On the top of it, the growing uterus in the abdominal cavity does not allow stomach to distend properly. Therefore there is acid reflux. Please observe an up right position after taking any food for minimum 2 hours. Continuous use of Nexium or any other acid controlling medicines is not advised during pregnancy. Acidity is needed for iron absorption. Use of antacids hampers iron absorption, rendering the mother anaemic and causing paucity in the foetal iron stores. For your diarrhoea, get your stools examined from the laboratory and then accordingly take the medication. In most infections of stools, metronidazole group of the medicines does work, however it is known to cause tremendous nausea and vomiting. Better take medication only after your obstetrician's advice.
