What Causes Black Stools?

Hello. I have had a clogged bile duct a few times and my Dr. in the next few months will be performing a ERCP to see if again this is the case. I have had the last few bowel movements, black stool, very black and dark. Do you feel this is serious or could it be from just eating maybe blueberry muffins that I had? Many thanks for your help.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

If there is the dark brown or black color stool then it may be due to blood contained fecal material but this condition may not be due to the biliary disease. Still, I would say that it is the matter of concern and it has to be taken seriously.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Akhtarhusain
