What Causes Blood And Mucus In Stool?

I had a tonsillectomy a couple of weeks ago, 2 days ago I was at my doctor's to refill a prescription and i started to cough up significant amounts of blood, swallowing some at the same time. I was rushed to have my throat re-cotterized. I was told that it looked like a scab came off and a blood vessel ruptured in my throat causing the bleeding. Now two days later I have significant amounts of black stool and blood and mucus in my stool. I have had nothing but clear liquids since the re-cotterization. I suspect the blood is still from swallowing after the last episode but at what point should i be concerned and when should i start eating solid foods?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi.

Thanks for your query.

Noted the history and understood the concerns. This is unfortunate but a known complication of tonsillectomy. This is called secondary bleeding from the tonsillar fossa. It is possible that one swallows lot of blood that on reaction in the colon changes to black color also called as malena.
Hence do not worry about the malena which can show for 3-4 days. Fresh bleeding can be due to piles or so in the anal canal.
To see whether the tonsillar fossa is bleeding or not you can to be seen by the ENT Surgeon and if present may need further management.
Till then continue cold liquids orally, take rest, watch for the medicines that you have been prescribed and avoid Aspirin and such medications that cause bleeding.

Take care.
