What Causes Blood In Stool?

for the last 4 days I am having bright red strands of blood on the stool surface. The stool colour is normal as it had been for so many years. It is solid and bowel movement is good. No stomach pain, no feeling of dizziness and no fever. Everything feels fine. Even appetite is good and no bloating. It feels as if I am what I am when I am in good health. But the red strands of bright red blood(pureed water melon color) is what concerns me.

Hello and welcome,
I would like to have the pleasure of explaining the cause and management of your complaint.
First of all the bright red colour indicates that the blood is coming out from a source which is very near to anal opening and if it was from a source far from intestines then it would have been dark red to black color .
Commonly it is because of hemorrhoids(piles) .Hemorrhoids are dilated blood vessels which enlarge to the extent that they come out of anus and due to repeated trauma during defecation particularly if there are hard stools these hemorrhoids bleed. There are two types of hemorrhoids external and internal. In early stages of internal hemorrhoids , bleeding could be the only manifestation of the disease and internal hemorrhoids are pain less.In your case this is the most likely cause ,as hemorrhoids are veins that are not present through out the circumference of the anus but at particular positions only and the bleeding may manifest as streaks .
The other causes could be
1)anal fissure ,which is a small superficial cut in anus .This is usually associated with pain but occasionally only mild discomfort may be present.
2)rectal polyp, this is small growth of mucosal lining of rectum.
3)It could be a rectal or anal tumour.
The diagnosis could be made on Proctoscopy which is examining anus and rectum through a metal tube called proctoscope specifically designed for the purpose.
The definitive management depends on the cause but I would like to suggest few measures that are benificial in all the rectal bleedings in general and hemorrhoids and fissure in particular.
1)Drink plenty of water
2)Take high fiber diet and avoid oily and junk food.
3)If having constipation take a laxative eg:- syrup lactulose 20 ml at bed time.
4)Sitz bathing:-it is taking warm water in a tub and putting 5ml of betadine solution and sitting in that thrice a day.It decrease and prevent local infection there.
5)If you are having history of similar complaint on and off then there is a high possibility that you might be suffering from anemia which is decreased in the amount of normal blood hemoglobin due to chronic bleeding. So get a blood test called CBP,complete blood picture which will show you if you have anemia and you may require iron supplementation.
Hope this will help You.Its our pleasure here at healthcaremagic to be at your service.Thank you.
