Several things can cause deep vein thrombosis (otherwise known as DVT's). A genetic disorder causing hyper coagulable state (blood clotting at a rate higher than normal). A history of cancer can definitely lead to increased inflammation, which in turn causes increased clotting. Other things that can cause deep vein thrombosis include Factor V leiden, Protein C/S deficiency and lupus anticoagulant which can be seen in vasculitis. In terms of treatment, usually for a first time DVT the treatment is warfarin (coumadin) for 6 months in order to prevent the blood clot getting larger and traveling to the lungs (known as a Pulmonary embolism). In terms of treating symptoms, compression stockings can help relieve symptoms and ibuprofen can be used for pain. I hope this is helpful. Feel free to contact me if you have any further questions.
