Even when I m not drinking or eating, saliva frequently gathers in my mouth and appears to leak into my windpipe and elicit a dry irrtitating cough. Is it due to my age of 87, is it dangerous, and is there any remedy? I have already had an upper GI x-ray which was OK. Thank you, Evelyn A Brown
This is not a dangerous situation, and it is related to the hyperproduction of the salivary glands. The main treatment in such cases are botox injection in the salivary glands to help improve your situation. Another treatment option would be amitriptyline, but this drug is not usually well tolerated at your age.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
