My husband is 46 and keeps falling asleep anywhere, standing up, sitting down, while eating. He sleeps almost all day and then he falls asleep while standing and whatnot at night while sleep walking. He has taken many falls because of this. What can be causing this?
You have mentioned that your husband sleeps excessively even at inappropriate times and this has led to falls.
I think the most important causes for his hypersomnia at this age is sleep apnea and narcolepsy. There can be some other symptoms like excessive snoring, dryness of mouth, sleep paralysis.
To diagnose this, polysomnography or SLEEP-EEG is required. I think you should visit a psychiatrist/neurologist for this.
For now, you can give him tablet provigil 100mg. This is a psychostimulant medication which will improve his symptoms.
Hope this info helps you. Thanks.
