What Causes Extreme Chronic Unproductive Cough And Mucus In Nose?

I m a 31 year old female. For the last 3 years I have been dealing with an extreme chronic cough. I ve been treated for asthma - given inhalers, breathing treatments, ect., I ve been treated for acid reflux, severe sinus problems, I ve had chest xrays done, I ve been on steroids, high doses of antibiotics... You name it and I ve either had it done or have been on it. NO ONE can seem to provide me with any relief. I have an extreme amount of mucus when I blow my nose, but my cough is completely UNproductive. I cough for hours at a time (5-8Hrs if not longer) I cough so hard that I end up throwing up at times. At times, it feels as though there s a tickle in my throat, but not always. At times, It sounds like I m wheezing, but not always. At times the cough sounds very wet , other times it s like a barking sounds. It s never consistant except for the fact that it s very harsh and last forever. Any comments?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Your symptoms are suggestive are suggestive of the following:
- Nasal discharge but unproductive cough indicate the cause to be allergic. The same allergy is causing continuous coughing without any mucus as irritation is the cause.
- Feeling of nasal discharge and postnasal discharge can be due to irritation and oedema at the back of nose.
Hence I would advise you the following in addition to the things already done:
- First of all try to identify the foods, beverages, factors, atmospheric changes, mould, mildews, pollen, hair of pets and a keen observation only can. Avoid all these.
- CT scan of sinuses and nose and second opinion of an ENT Surgeon, further evaluation, examination and surgical and medical treatment as would be needed.
- ENT Endoscopy, bronchoscopy to know whether there is any cause in the lower respiratory tract and to get it treated as you have hacking cough.
- Pulmonary function tests can help further.
- Lastly a psychological factor has to be considered and get treated if stress or anxiety is present.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, ENT & General Surgeon
