Hello,

You may be describing either SEVERE TENSION HEADACHES or more likely MIGRAINE LIKE HEADACHES by way of your symptoms.

Most of these headaches never seem to have an easy underlying cause. Do you have a family history of such as headaches.

Another source of severe headaches upon awakening could be LOW BLOOD CIRCULATING VOLUME that causes fluids (including blood) to pool in the legs resulting in a "sagging of the brain" leading to a sudden and severe headaches.

Another cause of severe headaches upon arising in the morning is that of CEREBROSPINAL FLUID LEAKS (which are often spontaneous).

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Dariush Saghafi, Neurologist
