What Causes Finger Joint Pain After Trauma To Hand?

I'm a healthy male in his early 30's and sustained a trauma to my hand approximately six weeks ago, resulting in hand/thumb pain (my hand was very forcefully grabbed). This did not resolve after 3 weeks and so I had an x-ray which was completely normal.

I followed up with an orthopaedic surgeon 6 weeks post-injury who again performed an x-ray, which was again read as normal (no fracture or joint deformities).

Over the course of the six weeks the pain did not subside so I received a steroid injection into my first cmc joint. That was just yesterday and I've yet to receive any relief. It is painful to do even simple things like buttoning or writing.

I am concerned about a permanent traumatic arthritis. Given my history, is this likely and is there anything more I should consider in terms of diagnosis and/or prevention of permanent joint problems?

Thank you.
