Hi. I had my first cold sore about a year ago... I didn't kiss anybody for about 3 years prior. My doc said I was probably exposed to the HSV-1 virus as a child. Sense then, I've developed what appears to be fordyce spots on my upper lip that appear to be getting progressively worse. I also have had worsening acne problems since then. I have talked to my primary physician as well as 2 dermatologists and they pretty much blow it off and say it's something I just need to accept an deal with. I am 41, single and very concerned... developing a complex. I don't know what I can do, if anything... do you have any insight or advice?
Fordyce spots are ectopic sebaceous glands(at places where they normally should'nt be). They are usually present in clusters on labial mucosa as well as on the mucosal aspect of prepuce as well. It is mainly a cosmetic concern without any clinical significance. Fordyce spots can become more prominent at puberty under the influence of testosterone.
Treatment is either CO2 Laser vaporisation or destruction with radiofrequency cautery. Oral retinoids are also helpful, because they shrink the size of sebaceous glands, thus making them less noticeable.
I would advice that you visit a dermatologist and discuss with him/her about the most suitable method.
take care regards
