What Causes Increasing Blood Sugar Level Inspite Of Taking Insulin?

I am diabetic and was just switched from pill medication to Lantus Insulin on thursday. They started me at 15 units and increase 1 unit a day until we reach goal of 110. It was 273 when I started and blood sugar is going up instead of down. My doctors nurse told me to increase it 2 units today ( could not reach doctor) and just cheched it about 1/2 hour ago and it is 459.

Diabetologist 's  Response
Hi, welcome to our site. I am Dr Saumya Mittal, MD.

Read your query. That is a very significant question and i appreciate your problem. I will try my best to answer your query

I am not sure how your doctors are playing it. I usually prefer to give my patients 2 types of insulin. One would be a long acting insulin. That is usually taken at bedtime. In addition I like to give a short acting insulin, called Actrapid, to cover meals.
I suggest the same for you.

You can start by taking 4 units of the insulin. And step it up slowly. Personally I would suggest you get admitted for a day or two, so that your needed dose can be calculated. And then we can further it from there.

By the way, what was the pill, dose of the pill, and why was it changed?

I hope this helps you. Inform the reports mentioned above/if any other so I can be of help further.

I have given you the answer to the maximum considering the information provided. The results of the tests could further enhance my answer to you.

Please do understand that some details could be extracted from a detailed history and examination.

Please feel free to ask another query. I would be glad to help you. Looking forward to your return query with the details asked so that I can help you further.
(If the answer has helped you, please indicate this)
Best of luck.
