What Causes Itching And Burning Sensation In Hand?

I am a 42 year old male who is a relatively good shape. Several years ago I began to experience itching in my left hand. Over the years it has progressed up my arm, into my right arm and now is more of a pain/burning itch. I am fairly confident this is a nerve issue, but to date have received no clarity from anyone on specifically what is going on or what to do about it. An MRI of my neck was clear.

Hello,

Itching in the hand may be caused by exposure to poison ivy, some allergic, direct sunlight, dryness, pruritis, eczema, nerve disorder, brachioradial pruritus, Notalgia paresthetica, etc. Since you have symptoms of pain, itching and burning in the arms; your symptoms are indicative of brachioradial pruritus. Avoid exposure in the sun. You are suggested to get clinically examined by a GP or a Neurologist and get ice pack test, X-ray, MRI/ CT done to confirm diagnosis.

Your treating doctor may test you for OA, herniated disc or spinal problems. In the meantime you can take antihistamines, pain relieving medicines (Acetaminophen, Combiflam) for relieve. You can apply Capsaicin or menthol ointment or cream locally for relieve. Physical therapy is helpful. You can take food rich in vitamin B6, B12, vitamin E or supplements to feel better. Control your blood glucose level at all cost if diabetic.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
