What Causes Macular Degeneration?

I am extremely nearsighted and I am 40 years old. I have early onset signs of macular degeneration. I am told it is due to my extreme nearsightedness. (I wear a -12 in contact lenses). I have excessive floaters and a flashing light in my left eye. I have had an exam and show no signs of retina tearing and my MRI was normal. Lately, I have now been feeling like I'm cross eyed, foggy vision headaches and dizziness. Not sure what is wrong?

Hello
It seems from the history that you are having high myopia.
The symptoms of flashes and floaters indicate problems like retinal thinning and retinal degenerations, vitreous degeneration which are common in high myopia.
This requires examination by indirect ophthalmoscopy and MRI may not be very much helpful in this condition.
Macular degeneration in myopia can be because of choroidal neovascularization which occurs in high myopia. This requires treatment by laser or other appropriate method.
Hence I advice you to consult your doctor for examination and treatment accordingly.

Thank you
