What Causes Metallic Taste In Mouth While Having Borderline Diabetes?

For the past two days, I ve had a metallic sweet taste in my mouth. I ve also had a rather ravenous appetite, even though my stomach was full, I wanted to keep eating. I ve recently been diagnosed as borderline diabetic and am taking Januvia. My family GP is out of the office until Monday.

Hi,

Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.

A metallic taste in the mouth is a relatively common side effect of medications.
Metallic taste in the mouth can also arise due to a disorder of the nerves that control taste sensations. Some common medical conditions that can cause metallic taste in the mouth include ear or upper respiratory infections .
Less serious side effects reported in ≥ 5% of patients treated with JANUVIA include:runny or stuffy nose, sore throat i.e. Upper Respiratory Tract Infection (URTI). Your metallic sweet taste in my mouth is due to JANUVIA related URTI,which is only temporary .
Ravenous appetite is due to hypoglycemia, again due to oral hypoglycaemic drugs like JANUVIA (sitagliptin). You should undergo blood sugar profile again like fasting.02 hours after break- fast and 02 hours after lunch and 02 hours after dinner & accordingly adjust the dosage.
