What Causes Numbness In Left Ankle, Swelling With Strong Tingle Around Foot After Removed Varicose Veins In Legs?

Hi
I had an operation to remove varicose vains in both legs (from behind the knee to the ankle) just under three weeks ago. Whilst I am now suffering very little discomfort from the op, in the left ankle and foot there seems to be quite a lot of swelling still and around the outside of the ankle it seems to be quite numb.

Furthermore there is quite a strange sensation which feels like a strong tingle, which moves around my foot, whist it is not painful it can be a little uncomfortable, it seems to be worst at night when in bed and is interrupting my sleep. I mentioned this to my GP who advised that this is blood that escaped during the the operation and is compressing nerves in my foot. He seemed to think that is is nothing to worry about and advised it will sort itself out over the next couple of weeks.

I was wondering if his diagnosis sounds correct, and also is there anything I can do or take to speed up the recovery process.

Many thanks

Every surgery damages the extremely small nerves that are in the skin (cutaneous nerves). They generally take 6 months to regenerate. This might be the reason for the tingling.
Swelling is due to escaped blood. It can be controlled by elevating the foot while sleeping and WEARING a tight DVT stocking before stepping the foot down the next day.
Your medication should include ingredients like trypsin, chymotrypsin, which combat swelling/inflammation.
Hope this helps and Good Luck !
