What Causes Paralysis After Removing The Clot From Spine?

my brother-in-law has just undergone emergency surgery where a clot was removed from his upper spine. it appears that he has some paralysis in his arms and legs... has only regained limited function of one hand. my sister mentioned that he has already begun physical therapy (surgery was just yesterday) ...does something like this usually result in some kind of permanent disability? (she said at this time he can't even answer a phone)

The paralysis can come from the compression of the spinal cord from the blood clot.

This can cause the spinal cord to have a "stroke", and can cause damage to the spinal cord.

There can be some improvement over the first few weeks and months, up to a year after surgery, so rehabilitation is important.
