Hello, and I hope I can help you today.
If your wife has been using the new ring correctly, 9which means leaving it in for at least three weeks, taking the ring out for one week, and replacing it with a new ring) there is no reason to suspect
pregnancy as the ring is greater than 99% effective as a
contraceptive.
However,
lactation in a woman who is not pregnant (unless she had a baby within the last six months or so was a nursing recently) can indicate other types of
hormonal problems. To be thorough, I recommend that your wife check an over-the-counter urine pregnancy test, as these tests are just as effective as a test in a doctors office. The other side effects that she feels, which are similar to pregnancy, can all be caused by the new ring. If if your wife is not pregnant, the rest of the symptoms that she feels are likely due to side effects from the
NuvaRing.
If your wife is having bothersome side effects from the NuvaRing, she should see the doctor who prescribed the ring for her for follow-up visit. She also can have hormone testing at that visit to determine why she is making milk.
I hope that I was able to adequately answer your question today, and that my advice was helpful.
Best wishes,
Dr. Brown
