What Causes Random Areas Of Skin Burning And Itching?

Hi, I seem to be experiencing random areas of my skin burning and itching for a period time. Creating a bumpy surface after I scratch the area. Then it goes away over the course of 5 minutes or so. Do you have any ideas as to what this is? I'm 54 years old and have allergies. But never experienced this type of reaction to my skin before.

Hello,

Thank you for asking at HCM.

I went through your history and would like to make suggestions for you as follows:

1. From your description, first of all I would think of urticaria - red/pink bumps with itching and burning that last for a few minutes.

2. In fact, there are numerous causes for urticaria. Some causes are very simple like exposure to sunlight, exposure to cold air/cold water/hot water, excessive sweating, etc. Other causes may be allergies, infections, etc. Some drugs such as painkillers like NSAIDs, etc also can cause such reactions.

3. It is very important to have detailed information about your symptoms and medical history to identify possible cause. If they are frequent, some investigations also may be necessary.

4. For treatment, I would suggest you antihistamine like cetirizine or levocetirizine on as-and-when-needed basis for relief.

5. Please do not scratch the itchy areas as scratching aggravates itching. I would suggest you to apply lotion such as calamine over the itchy area which would provide comfort.

Hope above suggestions will be helpful to you.

Should you have any further query, please feel free to ask at HCM.

Wish you the best of the health ahead.

Thank you & Regards.
