What Causes Red Inflamed Leg After Having Multiple Surgeries In The Ankle?
My husband has had multiple surgeries on his ankle...has worn a cast many times...he just had his ankle joint replaced again and received a plaster cast. He tolerated that well. The plaster cast was removed and then he was cast with fiberglass...it was on less than twelve hours and had to be removed due to extreme itchiness. Two days ago the fiberglass cast was removed, creme applied and he is now in an air cast walking boot. He's been taking Benadryl and applying hydrocortisone creme to the area we are able to push the gauze covering away from. His leg is still red and inflamed and very itchy. We keep him and the affected leg/ankle as cool as possible. (We do use an ice bag for 20 minutes or so every hour to help keep the leg/ankle cool.) Any advice to help ease the current situation? In the future, what can we do? He does have a latex allergy/sensitivity. So no latex gloves touch his skin. The gloves are changed after being in the water or touching the fiberglass to help with that issue. They also double sock him and use extra padding. His doctor is aware of what happens when he is in a fiberglass cast. Would this be considered a possible fiberglass allergy or dermatitis? Is there another material that could be used for a cast ? What else could be used under the fiberglass casting material to protect his skin besides the double socking and extra padding? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I would just like to help him be more comfortable. I'm not a fan of the walking boot as a cast because he will want to walk on it before it is time.
