What Causes Right Upper Quadrant Pain?

I am having acute right upper quadrant pain. It woke me up about an hour and a half ago. I am trying to decide if I need to go to the ER or not. I had gastric banding in July of this year but have never had any problems. Feel just slightly queasy.

Hi,

Noted the history and understood the concerns.

Gastric banding in July this year caused no problems till today means the present pain may not be related to surgery.
Acute pain in right upper quadrant that wake you up and feeling queasy can be due to gallbladder problems like impacted stone or infection, pancreatitis or liver problem.
Obviously history of surgery is to be kept in mind.
I would advise you the following in such a situation:
Best to rush to Er as you need symptomatic treatment for pain and other symptoms.
To have ultrasonography, X-ray and CT scan of needed.
If the primary investigations and treatment fail to give diagnosis and relief then you may need further evaluation by Upper GI Endoscopy and other tests of blood, urine and stool.
Once a proper diagnosis is made the treatment can be guided and appropriate.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T Chandrakant,
General Surgeon
