What Causes Severe Vomiting Continuously?

Hello, my 21 year old daughter has had sever vomiting for several hours now. It actually began last night, subsided for awhile and has been going full force since morning (Pacific Time). She can keep nothing down (7-up, Gatorade, etc.). I m concerned about dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. Don t know if she has a flu or food poising (though no one else she ate with last night is sick). Should we take her to the E.R. for i.v. fluids or just ride it out? At what point does this become dangerous? Thank you for your help. Laura

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Gastroenteritis is infection/inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. It consists of some or all of the following: loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea

Treatment involves: (1) treating or preventing dehydration. When a person has vomiting only a small amount of fluids should be used at a time.
If a lot is used then it will induce vomiting.

She should start with 1 tsp to 1 tbs every 5 minutes for 1 hour. If this is tolerated then the amount is increased slightly.

The Gatorade can be used.

(2)no eating of solid food for at least 24 hours. When she is ready to restart then she should use dry foods initially

(3)anti emetics- she can obtain medications to help reduce the vomiting

(4)probiotics- these would help to return the bacteria in the intestine to normal

I hope this helps
