What Causes Stool Frequency With Mucus And Blood?

Hi, my 6 yr old son caught a stomach virus from his older brother. He has had frequent stools for 5 days. However, today he seems to be going more frequently and his stool contains mostly mucus and a small amount of blood. Is this from irritation or should I have him checked?
