What Causes Sudden Hearing Loss And Ringing Ears?

Last night while I was sleeping, out of nowhere I woke up in the middle of the night because it seemed like I completely lost hearing on my left ear. When I cleaned it a little with a q-tip I got a little bit of wax but not much and unfortunately it didn t help. It s bugging me because I ve always had perfect hearing until today, I m 27 years old now. I still can t hear from my ear and I keep hearing a ringing noise in my ear. I can t afford to see a doctor since I recently became unemployed. Any suggestions?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted the history about a 27 year old person who woke up suddenly due to loss of hearing, tried q-tip and got little wax but no improvement. Sudden loss of hearing in an young person is usually due to one of the following reasons:
* Wax blocking the ear canal thereby allowing less air conduction.
* Sudden built up of fluid in middle ear behind the ear drum not allowing the drum and the small connecting bones to move.
First of all, do not try anything at home as using q-tip can actually cause more blockage, pain and so on. I would advise you to consult a doctor in a walk-in-clinic as you cannot afford to see a Doctor.

He can tell you whether this is due to wax or something else.
If there is wax then this may need a removal by a doctor or syringing by a nurse. If there is fluid development then a course of an antibiotic, anti-inflammatory and decongestant for a few weeks can help you to regain the hearing. If the ear canal and ear drum is normal then you need an audiometry examination and further evaluation and further management as per the cause found.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
