I am an active 59 year old female. I am at a healthy weight for my 5.5 height. My health is excellent...blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar on the low side of the normal range. A small vein that diagonally crosses my shin has become slightly raised. It is only noticeably if pointed out to someone. However, it throbs and tingles and was quite distracting while I was playing tennis. Could this be a temporary condition or does it sound like the first stages of varicose veins. I have had no prior vein troubles other then a few spider veins on the upper legs. These were removed via sclerotherapy approximately 18 years ago. Any thoughts about how I can halt the progression of this new situation? Thank you in advance. V.F.
hello, first of all i tell you that varicose vein is a progressive disease until you have not remove your superficial venous system, their progression can be stop as you did by sclerotherapy around 18 year back the new vein that you found diagonally crosses your shin may be due to incompetency of one of the perforator , perforators are the communicating vein which connect the deep venous system to superficial venous system of lower limb with a unidirectional flow of blood from superficial to deep, if due to some reason this flow reverse the pressure in superficial vein increases so the diameter of superficial vein increases and cause pain you should go for a color doppler ultrasonograpy for venous system of affected limb and locate the incompetence perforator if found than go for out patient surgery for perforator ligation with multiple ligation if perforator not found or all perforators are competent than you can go for sclerotherapy or multiple ligation etc. to stop the progression of a disease you should avoid long standing ,take rest for atleast 10 min. in between standing work with limb elevation and you can use elastic stockings while doing work or going out and remove it at home
