What Causes Tingling, Pain And Hyper Sensitivity To Right Hand Ring Finger?

I am a 43 year old man with a strange but somewhat convenient symptom. My right hand ring finger works like a warning signal for unhealthy living. If I have been living unhealthy for a continued time e.g. 6 to 15 weeks, I will get a pain, tingling, and hyper sensitivity in my finger. By unhealthy living I mean eating fatter food, no exercise and sports, and increased alcohol intake. If continued for an even longer period the pain and sensitivity will even spread into my middle finger. When I start to exercise and eat healthier the pain will completely disappear after 1 to 2 weeks of healthy living. This has been going on for about 15 years. It is virtually predictable and manageable like clockwork, sort of proportional to my body fat index or something. The pain in the finger will become in a way that it has a chronic tingling feeling in the finger, and it is extremely painful with the slightest touch, for example if I accidentally hit my finger very lightly into any object, it can almost paralyze my whole body from the pain, and I may break down and crumble on the ground. When that happens I know it is time to go to the gym. Some people in my family, my uncles, have excessive uric acids in their body, but they all have classical gout symptoms in their toes. I have no symptoms in other places than the finger, so I am not really thinking that it can be gout. The pain symptoms are quite similar to that described under peripheral neuropathy, but it seems that the diagnose does not really fit. I consider myself very healthy, except for my periodical weight gains. I am almost never ill, and I have great stamina and can outrun most men half my age in the gym. I am not wearing any rings on my finger, and to my knowledge I have had no trauma to the finger. I have not been to a doctor in 15 years, and do not have one, therefore I am writing here to get a some knowledge?

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

I do agree that you have strange symptoms but these symptoms most probably fit under ulnar nerve neuropathy. It can be off and on weight gain and increase sensitivity to nerve due to chemical alternation in your body (increase uric acid may be one of the cause).

At this stage, I want to advise you to have a nerve conduction velocity examination so that problem can be evaluated. There are various point where ulnar nerve can be compressed like at elbow, in forearm and at wrist area. I advise you to not to ignore this.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
