What Causes Uncontrollable Thyroid Levels After The Lactation Period?

Thyroid History I am a 30 year-old female who was diagnosed with hypothyroid about 5 years ago. My initial labs were in the 100â??s but I was able to stabilize my TSH levels around 1 to 1.5 mIU/L with Synthroid 75mcg daily. In Jan. of 2009, I started to take Domperidone to induce lactation as we were going to be adopting a newborn in April. Since then I have not been able to regulate my TSH levels under the care of my family practice doctor. Here is the list of my lab results since 2009. After discussion with my doctor, he is going to just say that if I am within 0.5 to 5mIU/L, that is going to be considered good for me. He feels that I am not symptomatic, but there are days when I donâ??t feel like I think I should feel. I get very moody and irritated at times and other times just down. As far as other medical history, I have never had a child of my own and believe that I have been diagnosed with mild PCOS. I am not sure how all of this may relate to my TSH levels if at all. Regarding family history, my mother, all of her siblings except one (3 sisters and 2 brothers), and my sister have all be diagnosed with hypothyroidism. Can you tell me if I should continue to manage my hypothyroid through my family practice doctor or should I see an endocrinologist? General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

The cause for persistent rise in TSH should be identified. Kindly measure TPO antibodies and Tg antibodies. High levels of these antibodies if present should be treated. Many studies have reported association between domperidone and TSH levels. Domperidone is said to increase TSH and Prolactin in many patients.Avoid using the drug.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
